LOCAL FICTION

BOOKS PLUS - THE LOCAL STOCKIST OF CORNISH BOOKS

Different historical periods set against the beauty of the Cornish landscape feature strongly in our popular Local Fiction.

The Queen of the Cornish novel must surely be Daphne Du Maurier whose works have atimeless appeal. JAMAICA INN (£6.99) and REBECCA (£6.99) provide a good introduction to her books.

Similarly all of WINSTON GRAHAM's POLDARK novels have now been re-issued with atmospheric new covers. Beginning with 'ROSS POLDARK', they prove popular with those who watched the 1970's television adaptation as well as with newcomers to his Cornish family saga.

E.V THOMPSON is another established favourite with KATE TREMAYNE a new addition to this list of histrical Cornish novelists.

Local author SARA MACDONALD is held in high esteeem as a Cornish fiction novelist of contemporary times, with sensetive landscape description and warm family histories at the centre of her craft.

PATRICK GALE has been a succesful novelist for many years. He has recently been voted best adult fiction writer by U.K INDEPENDENT BOOKSELLERS for his book NOTES FROM AN EXHIBITION which is set in Penzance area.

Local CRIME fiction is well served by W.J BURLEY's Superintendent Wycliffe series. WYCLIFFE AND THE PEA GREEN BOAT has been praised for its convincing characters and appealing landscape. Similarly, new author DEBBIE FOWLER has now published her 3rd Felicity Paradise crime novel THE SILVER SEA with ST.Ives and St. MICHAEL'S MOUNT as the backdrop to a mysterious drowning .

ROBERT GODDARD, recently described as "One of Britain's finest thriller writers" links three tragedies which occur in Penzance and the Isles of Silly in his latest crime novel NAME TO A FACE. (£6.99).. and THE PROMISE OF HAPPINESS by JUSTIN CARTWRIGHT gives a moving portrait of the effect of a daughter's prison sentence on a family whose home is Cornwall.

MARCIA WILLETT's new novel MEMORIES OF THE STORM is set in Devon on the edge of Exmoor. MARY WESLEY and ROSAMUND PILCHER have also written successful novels from the second world war period.

HELEN DUNMORE's ZENNOR OF DARKNESS brilliantly recreates D.H Lawrence's experience of West Cornwall during the second World War and is so evocative of the town of St.Ives and it's wild beauty. Similarly THE SAFFRON EATERS (recently republished) is set in a Cornish fishing village, spanning the yrars 1913-2005. KATE MORTON's THE FORGOTTEN GARDEN is a new book - a family saga set in the secretive, but beautiful Cornish estate of Blackhurst Manor.

TRUE COLOURS by MICHAEL SAGAR-FENTON is set in contemporaty Cornwall and offers a darker side to the vision of Cornwall's beauty which so enchants all who visit the county. Another contemporary book by GEORGE YATES is called THE YOUNG WITTGENSTEINS and covers the story of a set of Cornish college students.

Three novels- all set in Penzance - are proving popular. CROSSED BONES by Jane Johnson is a thrilling, romantic tale involving two young women from very different periods of history, with piracy and kidnap at it's heart. Robert Goddard's NAME TO A FACE is a murder mystery involving the sinking of HMS "Association" off Scilly in 1707. And Debbie Fowler's third novel in the Felicity Paradise series THE SILVER SEA (£6.99) is set between St.Ives, St, Michael's Mount and Tresco.

Lastly, but by no means finally, there is PATIENCE SWIFT, who has, in THE LAST GOOD MAN, produced a charming evocation of village life. In her book she tells the atmospheric tale of what happens when a small child is found washed up on a deserted beach.
