Bestselling novelist Kate Mosse, who is acting as a figurehead for Independent Booksellers Week, says:
"What a wonderful idea Independent Booksellers' Week is, and it's high time that we celebrate our vibrant independent bookshops. I've admired and shared independent booksellers' passion for books and reading, and I feel they play a crucial role in local communities. I love knowing that whenever I visit an independent bookshop it will have its own character and individual flair, with wondderful hand-picked ranges of books, and booksellers who will go out of their way to find the perect book. I hope that this initiative will encourage people to visit their local bookshops and discover for themselves what makes them so special."
Independent Booksellers Week is part of the Love Your Local Bookshop campaign which was launched in October 2007 with the Independent Booksellers' Book of the Year Award. Independent boooksellers created two shortlists - one adult and one children's - for the public to vote on. The winners were announced on the 17th December as Suite Francaise by Irène Némirovsky for the Adult sections, and Alone on a Wide, Wide Sea by Michael Morpurgo for the Children's category.
